The Board of the Barbados National Art Gallery is pleased to share news that the recipient of the 2024 Artist Grant is Ewan Atkinson!
Since 2022, The Barbados National Art Gallery Board has offered one-time grants of up to BBD $5,000.00 to a Barbadian artist to support their invited participation in a regional or internationally curated exhibition, biennial / triennial or recognized art event. Atkinson was selected as a participating artist in the 6th Edition of the groundbreaking contemporary art triennial Prospect New Orleans. Prospect.6 holds the theme: “The Future Is Present, The Harbinger Is Home”.

In addition, the Board is pleased to announce the acquisition of a work by Atkinson: “Peregrination: A Playable Game” (2018). The artist describes “Peregrination” on his website as an artefact from the wider series The Neighbourhood Project, a game “promising advice on how new residents might acclimate to this community and eventually attain acceptance and “prosperity””, but is positioned as a “puzzling conundrum” in terms of the timeline of its creation and use in The Neighbourhood Project universe. With a limited edition of ten, one version of the board game was commissioned and presented in play for the exhibition “Arrivants”, at the Barbados Museum & Historical Society in 2018, and was selected for exhibition in Prosepct.6. The Board of the Barbados National Art Gallery is thrilled to have a version of the game in the collection!
