Independence Celebration

In the foreground of this painting, Maurice Drakes captures a sea of people parading in the street on a sunny day. Drakes chooses to render this crowd using quick fluid brush strokes thereby evoking a sense of movement. By contrast, the storied buildings in the background to the right of the work are painted tentatively with solid washes of colour in pink and a gray with a blue undertone. A canopy of trees interspersed with emergent palm trees take the place of buildings to the left of the painting.
