A political Meeting

"A Political Meeting" depicts a scene of a crowd listening to a speaker on a podium, outside at night. The podium bears the colours of the Barbados Labour Party, and could reference campaign activity that led to the 2008 General Election. Brathwaite had always expressed an interest in capturing the tones of crowds, whether jubilant and celebratory, or vibrant in everyday life. With "A Political Meeting", the mood seems to be somber, the crowd are attentive to the man on the podium, but there seems to be a lack of energy in their engagement, compared to the energy of the speaker. This work was purchased in 2008.
