Ras Ilix Heartman

In Chant

1998

"In Chant" is an example of Heartman's key work arising out of the Barbados Rastafarian arts community. Sculpture and carved figures, influenced by West African aesthetics, contributed to the development of Barbadian art in raising awareness of indigenous sculpture styles. Although many of his works are figurative, the individual is not always the focus, rather a representation of a concept such as shamanism.
