Improvisation

1992

"Improvisation" employs a number of creative techniques to explore the physical act of covering, re-surfacing, re-touching, erasing, scratching, scraping, drawing, to reveal hidden layers. The abstract style is striking combined with a richness of colours used. Certain forms can be deciphered, such as circles resembling coins, and an "x" running through the relief. These may suggest a reference to salary cuts that occurred across Barbados in the early nineties, and could give an added meaning to the title of the work, as a commentary on the shifts, or improvisations that Bajans may have needed to make.
